It has been shown that soil is one of the best insulators in the world, and is ideal for water lines. When having your home re-piped many companies will offer to run new water lines through your ceiling. Overhead re-pipes run the risk of severe home damage if not properly installed and may leave you with hot water in the summer and cold water in the winter that can freeze your water lines.  The bottom line is that water lines do not belong in your attic!

How do I know if I have Kitec plumbing?

Kitec plumbing is a type of plumbing system that was widely used in homes from the 1990s until the early 2000s. It consists of flexible plastic pipes that are often colored blue for cold and orange for hot water. Unfortunately, Kitec pipes are known to deteriorate over time, leading to potential leaks and significant water damage. Additionally, homes with Kitec plumbing may face challenges with insurance coverage and can see a decrease in resale value. If you're purchasing a new home, it's essential to inspect for Kitec pipes to address any concerns proactively.

Where do I look for Kitec plumbing?

To identify Kitec plumbing, start by examining the appearance of the pipes. Most cold water Kitec pipes are bright, while hot water pipes are typically bright orange. Kitec pipes can come in gray, light blue, red, black, or orange. Look for common brand names such as Kitec, Kitec XPA, PlumberBetter, and IPEX AQUA. You can find Kitec plumbing in areas like bathroom sinks, kitchen sinks, near the hot water, or in laundry spaces. Check for markings like "KTC" or "Kitec" on visible fittings, and look for a sticker on your electrical panel that indicates Kitec was used, as this means your electrical system cannot grounded on it.

What do you do when you identify Kitec plumbing?

When you discover Kitec plumbing in your home, it’s crucial to take action by performing a full replacement. This process can be expensive, as many Kitec pipes are located under flooring and behind walls. Accessing the piping typically requires tearing down and replacing sections of the walls and flooring. To ensure the job is done right, contact Five Star Plumbing & Remodel to assess the problem and provide a solution.

Are there additional costs or concerns?

At Five Star Plumbing & Remodel, we strive to provide comprehensive solutions for your home repipe project. Our goal is to place all main water lines under the cement slab, but if radiant heating presents a challenge, we’ll skillfully run the new through the walls. We understand that this process may require drywall replacement, repainting, and potential flooring and tile repairs in your kitchen and bathrooms. Rest assured, we can handle it all, making us your one-stop shop for all your plumbing and remodeling needs!

Will my home owners insurance cover the cost?

If you're experiencing an active leak due to faulty Kite piping, it's important to know that while the class action lawsuit has expired, your insurance may still cover some of the costs. Coverage varies, so we can't guarantee specifics, but we're here to assist you in navigating the process. Our team will work closely with you and your insurance company to ensure you achieve the best possible outcome. Don't hesitate to reach out for support!
